Prerequisites

• Ensure that you have created a template and added it to a template group: Creating a New Template
• Ensure that you have the proper permissions to be able to create expressions.

Overview

Creating expressions in MergeUp is a very easy process that allows you to dynamically insert content into your templates. Expressions are reusable pieces of text or code that you can insert into various templates within the same template group. Here are the steps for how to create a new expression within a template group.

Steps

1. Begin by navigating to the desired template, then ensure that you are on the "Template Data" tab.

2. Inside the "Template Data" tab, locate the "Expressions" component at the bottom of the page, and create a new expression by clicking the "New Expression" button in the top right-hand corner.

   

3. Choose whether to use HTML formatting for the Expression. Use this option if you need formatting inside the Expression, such as bolding, links, or bulleted lists; otherwise, you can just use an unformatted Expression.

4. If you need to switch from HTML formatting to no formatting, or vice versa, you can change the "Use HTML Expressions?" toggle. Please note that switch from HTML formatting to no formatting will cause any current formatting to be lost.

   • When switching from HTML formatting to no formatting, first accept the confirmation prompt.

     

   • The formatting will be removed from the Expression text after accepting.

     

   • Switching from no formatting to HTML formatting doesn't require a prompt.

     

5. After saving, your new expression becomes available for use in any template within the same template group by referencing the provided alias in your template document.

   

Notes

• By default, HTML Expressions use the font defined in your Template Document; if you define a specific font in the HTML, that font will be used in the document.
• It's important to note that expressions follow the same syntax as regular content you add to your templates. This means you can seamlessly integrate expressions into your templates without worrying about special formatting or syntax.

• You have the option to either use a scrollbar the Expression column in the expressions table or wrap the text by selecting the downward arrow located on the right side of the column header.

  

Known Issues

• Sub-bullets in unordered lists do not receive the correct symbol.
• When switching from HTML formatting to no formatting, text in sub-bullets will be merged one line up and leave a blank line at the bottom of the list; this applies for both ordered and unordered lists.
