Dynamic file names on a template basis in MergeUp offer a powerful and efficient feature that enables customized output file names generated during document merging. This functionality is particularly useful when dealing with base records and their related parent relationships within a record type template group. By incorporating fields from the base record and its parent relationships, the output becomes personalized and relevant to each specific record, while also eliminating the need for administrators to create additional formula fields in certain cases.

Syntax:

The syntax for utilizing the dynamic file names field closely resembles the formula field syntax used within Salesforce. However, it's important to note that only the inclusion of fields is allowed; functions are not supported. The structure of the syntax to add a field is as follows:

Example:

Example Scenario: You have a template group based on the "Invoice" object. You want to generate an invoice document with a dynamic file name that includes the account name associated with the invoice. Let's assume there is a lookup to Account on Invoice with the following API Name: Account__c.

To achieve this, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the dynamic file name field within a templates "Template Settings" tab.

2. Apply the following syntax: {!Account__r.Name} - Invoice

   • {!Account__r.Name} references the "Account Name" field from the base invoice record (invoice's associated account).
   • - Invoice adds the string " - Invoice" after the account name.
3. Save the template.

Upon merging a document related to a specific invoice, MergeUp will automatically substitute the placeholders with actual data. For instance, if the invoice is associated with an account named "ABC Corp," the resulting file name will be "ABC Corp - Invoice."

Example Scenario 2: Consider a more intricate scenario where your template is centered around the "Quote" object, and you aim to generate documents with dynamic filenames containing both the associated account's name and the quote number, followed by the term "Proposal." Let's assume there is a lookup to Account and a field defining the quote number on Quote with the following API Names: Account__c, QuoteNumber__c.

1. Navigate to the dynamic file name field within a templates "Template Settings" tab.

2. Implement the following syntax: {!Account__r.Name} - {!QuoteNumber__c} - Proposal

   • {!Account__r.Name} references the "Account Name" field from the associated account.
   • - includes a hyphen separator between the account name and the quote number, which is just hardcoded text.
   • {!QuoteNumber__c} represents the placeholder for the "Quote Number" field from the base record.
   • - Proposal appends the constant string " - Proposal" to the end which is more hardcoded text.
3. Save the template.

Upon merging a document related to a specific quote, MergeUp will automatically populate the placeholders with the actual data. For instance, if the quote is associated with an account named "XYZ Corporation" and has the quote number "Q12345," the resulting file name will be "XYZ Corporation - Q12345 - Proposal."
